A man died last night after he lost control of the car he was driving and crashed, the police said Tuesday.
The accident took place in Mdina Road, Attard, on Monday at 9.20pm.
The driver, a 25-year-old man from Mtarfa, lost control of the Mercedes he was driving. The crashed into a tree and ended up beyond the barriers on the side of the road, against a steel structure, the police said.
He was certified dead on site.
The man has been named as Alejandro Brincat, a football player for Vittoriosa Stars.
"A very sad day for our club", Vittoriosa Stars said on its Facebook page.
"Alejandro was a true gentleman and a very respected player within the team. Our number #99 will be deeply missed by all of us and also for sure by those who knew him.Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time," the club wrote.
Magistrate Ian Farrugia is leading an inquiry.
