Residents of the Corradino Correctional Facility will be crafting the furniture for 29 apartments owned by Puttinu Cares in London, the Home Affairs Ministry said in a statement on Friday.
These apartments provide shelter to patients and their families during their most difficult times, and the residents of the facility are joining many other Maltese people who have contributed to making this dream a reality.
At a press conference, the Minister for Home Affairs, Security, and Employment, Byron Camilleri, described this project as one that combines two of the most noble goals: providing support to those going through challenging moments and rehabilitating individuals who have wronged society but are now determined to give back.
Minister Camilleri explained that in recent years, the government has focused heavily on the rehabilitation of correctional facility residents. This has been achieved not only through the employment of various professionals within the Correctional Services Agency but also through agreements with non-governmental organizations. This collaboration will lead to the opening of the third halfway house, which will be the first one dedicated to female residents. Work is also part of the rehabilitation process, and this project with Puttinu will benefit the residents of the correctional facility as well.
“This is a project for all Maltese and Gozitans. Puttinu is close to everyone’s heart, which is why the people have supported this dream through their donations. This project offers great hope—not only to those seeking treatment but also to those wanting to reintegrate into society and say, ‘I understand, I have learned, and now I am ready to contribute further,’” said Minister Camilleri.
The CEO of the Correctional Services Agency, Chris Siegersma, stated that the agency’s involvement in this project reflects not only its dedication to social causes but also the impact it will have on the lives of those in need. Through this initiative, the agency is offering prisoners an opportunity to rehabilitate themselves further, preparing them to return to society with a stronger sense of responsibility.
The President of Puttinu Cares, Angele Cuschieri, emphasised that this project should honour the nation, adding that even foreigners are often amazed by the generosity of the Maltese people. The primary aim of these apartments is to allow patients and their families to focus on treatment and recovery while Puttinu takes on part of their burden by providing dignified accommodation free of charge.
She also noted that these prisoners, through their talents, will be giving back to society and alleviating the suffering of many patients and families going through difficult times.
During the press conference, Josefa Sammut, a mother of two children who have a rare condition requiring treatment in England every six weeks for ten years, represented the families who will benefit from this project.
She explained the significant difference this project will make in her life and her family’s, as the apartments will be located close to the hospitals. She expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the work the prisoners will do to ensure these apartments are ready to host families in need.
