L-Istrina, the annual Boxing Day telethon, has kicked off.
The 12-hour telethon raises money for the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation, and is being broadcast on all major Maltese TV stations, with people being urged to donate either over the phone or in person.
This year, the telethon is taking place at the Sports Complex in Kirkop. It is the first edition taking place under the patronage of President Myriam Spiteri Debono.
Hours before the event, President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono in an interview on L-Istrina's Facebook page described how her visit to patients in London 'broke' her. She described seeing the sacrifices made by individuals, the suffering they faced. "Not only physical suffering, but mental suffering. For example, there was a family, a mother, father, baby and the maternal grandmother." She said that the grandmother opened up to her.
Apart from what she was feeling and her wish to see her grandchild recover, the baby was a year and a half, the grandmother also spoke of how her daughter was going through the ordeal just as she had started living her own life, the President said. The President said that the grandmother was not only seeing her grandchild, but also seeing her daughter suffering.
The grandmother told her that the baby's father was with them, and as such wasn't at work.
"Maybe people out there think that when they face illness they need to seek treatment to maybe achieve a cure. But illness is not just about a cure, it throws families into more suffering as many a time the income of that family reduces," the President said.
