New life is being breathed into the gardens adorning the 19th-century Villa Portelli in Kalkara through a joint collaboration between Project Green and Heritage Malta, the government said.
The gardens of the historic property date back to the early Victorian era. Built as the summer residence of prominent businessman Agostino Portelli, the villa later became a residence for British admirals, further cementing its importance in Malta's cultural and naval history.
Accompanied by the teams of Project Green, Heritage Malta, and the Kalkara Local Council, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli and Culture Minister Owen Bonnici visited the grounds, which are now open to the public on a weekly basis.
Project Green and Heritage Malta embarked on a €3 million regeneration project through which the outer gardens have been regenerated, whilst works will continue to restore the villa itself. In their totality, the gardens of the villa measure over 5,000 sqm. An interpretation centre on the ground floor will provide visitors with an educational experience on the historical aspects of the villa and the ongoing restoration process.
Restoration works by Project Green in the gardens were supported by the knowledge of Heritage Malta curators to ensure that the historical integrity is protected. They will be used as a vegetable and herb garden for Taste History, Heritage Malta's gastronomic branch.
"Our green projects are touching the different dimensions of human society. From open spaces for children to play in to spaces that provide social support to gardens that reflect our heritage and identity, we want these projects to provide residents with a better quality of life in all its aspects," Minister Miriam Dalli said.
Minister Owen Bonnici expressed his appreciation for Heritage Malta's efforts to restore such sites to their rightful dignity and said that the government is committed to continuing with initiatives aimed at preserving, restoring, and rehabilitating historical sites on a regular basis.
Kalkara Mayor Wayne Aquilina stated, "I am very happy that another promise is being fulfilled, making this historic building in our locality more accessible to the public, particularly the Kalkara community. The regeneration of Villa Portelli's gardens is providing another serene space in Kalkara where people can appreciate the villa's beauty and the charm of our locality. I eagerly anticipate the completion of the remaining sections of Villa Portelli so it can be fully utilised and enjoyed by everyone."
Villa Portelli will host events and activities as part of an outreach programme in the coming weeks and months. The gardens are pet-friendly and offer a space for relaxation, education, and community engagement. The gardens will be open to the public every Sunday from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Entrance is free of charge.
