No circular has been issued in recent days regarding search procedures for bombs in schools, the Ministry for Education said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Education Ministry is referring to recent reports about search procedures for bombs in schools, including reports of a statement made by the Malta Union of Teachers in which the MUT said that a communication circulated in schools and produced by a unit within the Education Ministry stated that “the Head of School needs to appoint a ‘search team’ to search for bombs in schools”. The union remarked that such a procedure is unheard of, and continued that the MUT would “not accept that educators go to search for bombs in schools during a bomb scare”.
The Ministry said that the document in question was developed in 2010 under a previous administration, and added that the document has never been circulated in the last ten years.
It continued that it has been proactive and communicated with the responsible entities that have the necessary tools and training to respond to this situation. “It is certainly not the intention of the Ministry to burden individuals with responsibilities for which they are not qualified or trained and therefore endanger their well-being in any way.”
The Ministry concluded that it will continue working so that various protocols and policies continue to be updated to reflect present realities, and added that it has carried out several exercises in recent years through which it has always consulted with various entities to ensure the welfare of every individual in the educational sector.
