A man was arrested by police over the weekend after he was found to have three different types of drugs on him as he tried to avoid police manning a routine traffic stop.
Police said that officers manning a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon in Triq Giuseppe Garibaldi in Paola noticed a vehicle reversing into the entrance of a field as soon as the driver spotted the police.
As police approached, the driver – a 22-year-old man from Valletta – told officers that he did not have a driver’s licence. Police subsequently searched the vehicle based on reasonable suspicion, and found two packets filled with a substance suspected to be cannabis, together with an amount of cash.
Officers also searched the man himself, at which point the suspect pulled two bags hidden in his trousers and threw them into a reservoir next to the field he had reversed into.
The bags were immediately gathered by the officers and they were found to include small bags with white and brown substances which are suspected to be cocaine and heroin respectively.
The man was arrested and is being held at the police’s lock-up in Floriana. He is set to be charged on Tuesday morning before magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace.
