Justice Minister Jonathan Attard has revealed that 691 magisterial inquiries have come to a close in the first ten months of 2024, i.e., from 1 January till 30 October.
Of this total, 656 magisterial inquiries were decided in the Maltese Courts and the latter 35 were concluded in the Gozo Courts.
In each of the last five years, the total number of magisterial inquiries completed has varied by a few hundred. 2020 saw the judiciary conclude a staggering 1136 magisterial inquiries (1113 in Malta, 23 in Gozo); 2021 saw 916 inquiries conclude (874 in Malta, 42 in Gozo); 2022 saw the lowest total, with 698 magisterial inquiries completed (658 in Malta, 40 in Gozo); and 2023 featured a total of 767 magisterial inquiries concluded (715 in Malta, 52 in Gozo).
Within this five-year period, the global expenditure for magisterial inquiries "and other procedures in the criminal field" amounted to €42,392,730
The total costs for these magisterial inquiries and procedures in 2020 was €9,721,814 - the highest total from all the years. In 2021, this figure began to drop, declining by about €400,000 to €9,316,651. The total expenses for 2022 reached €8,976,706 and the total expenditure for 2023 amounted to €8,807,414.
The total costs for magisterial inquiries and other criminal procedures carried out in 2024, till 30 October, summed up to €5,570,145.
