The new cooperative "Koperattiva Għasel Malti Ltd," comprising numerous Maltese and Gozitan beekeepers, was officially launched.
This project is considered a crucial step towards safeguarding apiculture, the vital sector for honey production, and preserving our islands' biodiversity, the cooperative said.
The cooperative said it will work to ensure that beekeeping serves as a pillar of ecological sustainability, while promoting education among the young and old public about the importance of honey, bees, and biodiversity.
"The cooperative will be an essential tool to protect beekeepers and safeguard apiculture. Without bees, pollination would be threatened, and fruit production would suffer. We are committed to creating a better future for our bees and biodiversity while promoting sustainable education," stated Rodney Galea, Secretary of the Cooperative.
This ceremony was attended by the Minister for the Economy Silvio Schembri, the Minister for Agriculture Anton Refalo, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries Alicia Bugeja Sajd.
Ambjent Malta is collaborating with Koperattiva Għasel Malti to provide trees and shrubs to cooperative members through a new scheme. This initiative aims to enhance the local environment by promoting the preservation of Maltese habitats and ecosystems. Applications for the scheme will be open to all members of Koperattiva Għasel Malti from 6 November to 6 December 2024.
On the other hand, the Malta Food Agency supports the cooperative in promoting Malta's honey, which holds a Geographical Indications quality mark, and in its ongoing efforts to uphold this standard.
