Isabelle Bonnici, the mother of Jean Paul Sofia, who died in a construction site collapse in Kordin, 2022, has launched an appeal to Prime Minister Robert Abela and Opposition Leader Bernard Grech to make changes to the law about inquiries in unnatural deaths.

In a statement issued by Ghal Jean Paul, Bonnici launched the appeal to continue her ongoing fight for justice and truth.

"Isabelle has always reiterated, the search for truth and justice was never just for her son, but also for all those who have fallen victim to unnatural deaths and for their relatives who are still left without answers," the statement read.

It said that Bonnici, who garnered national support and united the country in favour of opening a public inquiry into her son's death, has extended an invitation to the relatives of victims who are still without answers regarding the unnatural deaths of their loved ones.

She called on them to contact her through the Facebook page 'Għal Jean Paul' and to join her in her push for the necessary changes in favour of the opening of public inquiries following unnatural deaths and the publishing of said inquiries.

Bonnici stated that unless the victim's relatives decide otherwise, the results of the inquiries should be made public on accessible platforms, free of charge.

In her appeal, she appealed to both Abela and Grech to join her in tackling issues related to unnatural deaths and the challenges faced by the affected families through the introduction of legislation in Parliament for the sake of national interest.

Specifically, Bonnici called for the introduction of legislation that would ensure the publication of inquiries into unnatural deaths and further emphasized that such transparency is essential to achieving justice in a democratic country.

She addressed political leaders, urging them to set aside their political differences and, as Maltese brothers and sisters, take decisive action in honour of our children.

"Isabelle's message is clear: her son's death should not be in vain," the statement read.

Bonnici hopes that her efforts, along with the peoples' will, will lead the concerned authorities to implement the much needed reform in order to help prevent injustices and give the families of victims the certainty that the truth will be revealed.

"This can only be carried out through the opening of public inquiries of unnatural deaths and for the said enquiries to be published," the statement read.
