The Birkirkara local council is still unable to reach agreement on who its mayor for the legislature will be.

It became apparent that the impasse in the mayorship of the Birkirkara local council will persist on Monday evening, as independent councillor Kaylocke Buhagiar had refused an offer from the Labour Party - meaning that an agreement is yet to be reached.

Desirei Grech, who has been serving as temporary mayor for the past three months, said on social media on Wednesday, when a council meeting took place, that "as already happened at the beginning of the legislature, the councillors did not agree. That is why another meeting is scheduled for next week so that we can again vote in order for the voice of the Birkirkara residents to be heard."

TVM reported that six rounds of voting took place and there was no consensus on who should take the role. It said that if in the meeting next week no consensus is reached, then a legal mechanism will trigger whereby the individual with the highest number of votes from the party that received the most votes will lead the local council temporarily for another three months.
