Former Nationalist Party MP Karl Gouder and the former head of the European Commission delegation to Malta Lorenzo Vella will be nominated for the ‘Gieh ir-Repubblika’ honour for the work they conducted throughout their lives for the good of the country, Nationalist Party Leader Bernard Grech said during an appearance on party media.

Gouder, the former Mayor of St Julian’s and a former PN MP, passed away at the age of 45 and was found dead in Valletta on 10th September, with his death resulting in various tributes and messages from across the country asserting his good character. His funeral took place last Saturday.

Vella, a former deputy permanent representative of Malta to the European Union, passed away at the age of 43 on August 18th. His death also saw many tributes and messages pouring in from Malta as well as Europe.

Grech said that he will be nominating the two deceased civil servants for the ‘Gieh ir-Repubblika’ society of honour, which is an award intended to recognise certain individuals who have demonstrated exceptional merit in the service of Malta. It is the country’s highest honour which can be bestowed upon a civilian.

Speaking about the independence festivals and celebrations, Grech said that when remembering the past, it is to be done with pride, not nostalgia. He continued that the PN has always believed in a vision for the country, and then invited people to participate in events which will be taking place in Valletta as part of the independence festivals well as in remembrance of Gouder.

The Opposition Leader said that the party is working to restore political independence to the country, and added that there will be a political discussion taking place on Wednesday after which a tribute will be taking place for Gouder. “Karl continues living, not just in our memory, but also in our work.”
