Minister for Education Clifton Grima visited the new Msida Primary which, government said, will be the most environmentally-friendly public school in Malta.

The Education Ministry said that the new primary school in Msida, which is set to receive students and educators this month, will be the first carbon neutral public school that has been built locally. It said the €24 million project was co-financed by the NextGenerationEU Programmes through the Recovery and Resilience Plan for Malta and establishes new environmental standards for the educational facilities in Malta.

The Ministry said that Msida Primary will reach the highest energy classification of A+ with an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) of -9 which, it said, makes the new school one of a kind in Malta in terms of education facilities and buildings. Minister for Education Clifton Grima visited the school on Thursday morning to see the final preparations that will allow the school to be in use near the end of the month.

Grima said: "The construction of the new primary school in Msida within the Santa Tereza College is proof of the Ministry and Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools (FTS) solid commitment for modern infrastructure with a better environment with respect towards sustainable development. This building goes beyond the statutory requisites as established by the EU Directive on The Energy Performance of Buildings." The Ministry added that the school's design was made according to the standards of best practice and in a way to ensure that the energy needs will be as low as possible.

The ministry said that to reach this aim, the FTS, with collaboration from the University of Malta, conducted preliminary technical studies on the architectural concept designs in order to find appropriate and cost-optimal measures so that the design will near the status of near-zero energy.

Grima said that this school is the first of its kind in the country with an environment adapted for today's educational needs as well as those of the future. He said: "We believe that the second home of students and educators should be one that not only serves its function, but also provides the best environment in which children can enjoy learning and the educators enjoy teaching."

The ministry said that in terms of environmentally friendly measures, the new school was built with the adoption of various actions in favour of the environment amongst which was; the insulation of the walls and ceiling with a material that keeps cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather, the recycling of rainwater in specialised wells for use in sanitary facilities and irrigation. It said that the new school has around 40 classrooms, a childcare centre, a public library and a hall that can hold up to 300 people. It added that the public library, the hall and an amount of recreational space will be able to be used by the local community after school hours.

The ministry said that as part of this project, a new complex for the Msida Sea Scouts was built as well as a parking area below the school on two levels with the capacity for around 180 vehicles.
