PM denies he gave instructions

Prime Minister Robert Abela on Sunday evening denied that he had given instructions to police officers not to interrogate people who were named in the magisterial inquiry into the Vitals hospitals concession.

In a report, MaltaToday quoted Labour Party insiders saying said that the gravest mistake made by Abela "was the decision to derail an investigation by the police into those individuals mentioned in the conclusions of the hospital's inquiry. They explained how he had directed senior police figures to not interrogate individuals mentioned in the inquiry, and instead have them all be charged in court, to ensure former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is not seen as the sole figure behind the fraudulent deal."

NGO Repubblika urged the PM to either deny the report or resign.

In his statement Sunday, the PM said that he never gave any such direction "as maliciously reported" without any verification with the OPM. The intention was not to be factual in the report, the PM said.

Decisions as to who is interrogated and eventually charged is in the hands of the police and the Attorney General, and the PM is "completely extraneous" to such decisions and did not interfere in the functions of the mentioned institutions.

The statement said that the government has implemented reforms to strengthen the rule of law and is committed to continue doing so while increasing the efficiency of the police corps.
