The government has said that the independent Police Complaints Board presided over by retired judge Geoffrey Valenzia has been assigned the task of conducting an analysis in light of the murder of Nicolette Ghirxi, which occurred on Monday, 12th August 2024.

There have been several calls made for an independent inquiry to be set up including by the victim's family.

"The analysis will also scrutinize the implementation of the recommendations that emerged from the Ministerial Inquiry of Thursday, 23rd February 2023, and the operations related to domestic violence and gender-based violence within the Police Force, based on the same suggestions. This will be conducted alongside an analysis of the workings of the relevant laws and standard operating procedures in place."
