Smoke from extensive wildfires in Canada has reached the centre of the Mediterranean, including the Maltese islands, a popular weather page said on Tuesday.
“This smoke ended up migrating a distance of 8,000 kilometres by combining with several storm systems across the Atlantic, northern Europe and finally the Mediterranean,” Maltese Islands Weather wrote on Facebook, sharing an image of satellite observations.
“This phenomenon serves as a reminder that all that happens in any part of the world, no matter how isolated, eventually affects each and every one of us,” the page said.
Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada, was hit by the largest wildfire in a century which burned through over 80,000 acres of land and ravaged a third of the nearby township of Jasper.
The fire began on 22 July and was only classified as being ‘held’ – meaning that it is not expected to spread – two days ago.
Residents were allowed to return to Jasper on Saturday having evacuated the town three weeks prior. One firefighter died while fighting the blaze, succumbing to his injuries after a tree fell on him while he was fighting the fire.
