Hamrun S.-Sliema Wanderers 1-2

Sliema Wanderers added another trophy to their precious haul when they beat Hamrun Spartans by the odd goal in three to win the first edition of the Summer Cup.

It was a solid display from the Wanderers who played much of the second half with ten men, against a rather disjointed Hamrun side.

The Blues fully deserved their victory as they were the better team with the Spartans again found wanting in attack, a problem they seems to keep haunting the local champions.

Sliema took the lead in their first real attack on 15 minutes when Acheampong dribbled past a slow Mayron to score with a precise grounder.

The Spartans held the initiative butnever had a glimpse of goal. Vito Plut on the other hand just missed the crossbar after a fine run, and Steve Pisani tested Celio from the edge of the area.

Four minutes into the second half Sliema were awarded a penalty for a Joseph Mbong handling infringement.

From the penalty spot Murilo Henrique made no mistake. This goal was a severe blow for the already struggling Spartans.

They pushed forward but could not find a way past a very organised Sliema defensive set up.

On 65 minutes some hope for Hamrun when Steve Pisani was shown a straigh red for a dan‐ gerous tackle on Letherby.

With numerical superiority Hamrun piled more pressure but their superiority was sterile and the Sliema goalkeeper had only one great save to make off a Sven Xerri point blank header.

Five minutes into stoppage time Raphael Lopes found some space from the edge of the area and fired a beauty that finished in the top corner of the net.

But it was too little to late for Hamrun as the Blues were wor‐ thy winners.

MFA vice president Adrian Casha presented Sliema captain Murilo Henrique with the new Summer Cup trophy.
