Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna has expressed his anger at what he described as a parody of the Last Supper at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, held in Paris yesterday.

In a tweet on X, formerly Twitter, Mgr Scicluna said that he had written to the French Ambassador to Malta, expressing “distress and disappointment” for the “gratuitous insult” to the Eucharist via a parody of the Last Supper.

He has encouraged others to send similar messages expressing their disdain.

Mgr Scicluna said that his distress is shared by many Christians.

Part of the opening ceremony showed a drag-queen themed apparent parody of the Last Supper, a Renaissance painting by Leonardo da Vinci showing Jesus and the 12 apostles.

Videos of the performance were shared on social media, drawing criticism.

18 performers were posed behind a long table, with the Seine River and Eiffel Tower in the background.

The Olympic Games official page on X (Twitter) described the scene as the interpretation of the Greek God Dionysius making “us aware of the absurdity of violence between human beings”.

The archbishop is not on his own in feeling insulted by the scene.

"This was extremely disrespectful to Christians," Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wrote.

French politician Marion Maréchal said, "To all the Christians of the world who are watching the #Paris2024 ceremony and felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France that is speaking but a left-wing minority ready for any provocation. #notinmyname"
