Conducting a consultation process to see an improvement in traffic management remains a commitment of Mosta’s Local Council, it said in a statement published on Wednesday morning.

This was said following a situation which took place during the second meeting of the current legislature, which was held on Tuesday. A resolution was presented during the meeting which dealt with revising the closing times of the Mosta centre “due to the negative impact on residents and the business community”.

The details of the resolution state that from 9 to 15 August 2024, during the week of the feast, the square’s new closing times would be those usually used for the celebrations of Saint Mary’s feast. The Local Council said that this would be based on the need to not obstruct the activities planned by the Church and Mosta’s societies and organisations, and would include the full cooperation of the police.

The Mosta Local Council said that from the first weekend at the start of September, the centre of Mosta would no longer be closed as has happened in recent months. It said that traffic would be allowed to pass, provided that there is no community or commercial activity. It continued that this decision is based on the opinion “of a significant number of residents and commercial entities who felt that the closure had a negative impact on the community and the standard of living in Mosta”.

Mosta’s Mayor, Joseph Gatt, and the Nationalist Party councillors “requested an extension of the meeting time to ensure the work of the Mosta Local Council was not halted”, but the Labour Party councillors walked out of the meeting, resulting in the meeting being adjourned.

Following this, the Local Council said that the Mayor will, in the coming days, be calling an urgent meeting as per Article 29A of Chapter 363, also known as the Local Councils Act.

Article 29A of the Local Councils Act states that a meeting of the council may be requested by at least half of the councillors in office, with the request including a proposed meeting agenda. The Act continues that if the meeting is not held within one week from the receipt of the request following due notification of all councillors, “such councillors may summon such meeting of the council themselves and fix the agenda”.
