Lincoln won 5-4 on penalties

Hamrun Spartans were eliminated from the First Qualifying Round of the UEFA Champions League against Lincoln Red Imps with the awarding of penalties ,after the score finished 1-0 in their favour by the 120th minute.

Hamrun played almost a full match with one extra player when Dan Bent was sent off for the opponents after only 5 minutes. The goal of the Spartans came in the 89th minute from the substitute Vitao.

The match took a similar turn to that of the first leg as after five minutes we had an expulsion, with the difference being that this time Lincoln Red Imps player Dan Bent was sent off for a nasty foul on Ederson Bruno.

The first danger came from Hamrun in the 13th minute when it was Prsa who tried from the edge of the box with Santana receiving a half-volley, with the ball coming to Mbong but his conclusion was not a good one and the -Red Imps goalkeeper welcomes back.

The Maltese champions thought they had gone on top in the 22nd minute when Prsa passed a precise ball over the defense to Raphael Lopes who in front of Santana finished in the net, but after consulting with the VAR, the French referee Eric Wattellier canceled the goal.

In the 35th minute came the first dangerous shot of the team from Gibraltar when from outside the box it was Villacanas who tried his luck but found Henry Bonello alert and with a wonderful save turned it into a corner.

The score until the end of the first half did not change and both teams went to rest in a goalless draw.

While Hamrun obviously wanted to score to bring the aggregate equal again, it was Lincoln Red Imps who went on the offensive in the second half where Villacans tried a shot from outside in the 61st minute but found Bonello again in his place ' easily.

Hamrun had a golden chance two minutes later when Talison's corner found Borg who headed in, with the ball falling in front of Prsa who, however, from under the goal failed to hit properly and the chance crumbled.

Despite the numerical superiority, Hamrun could not penetrate the Lincoln’s defense for long periods of time until one minute from the 90th it was Vitao who from Marcelina's pass, Hamrun's substitute threw it behind Santana and therefore the match had to go to extra time.

In the 110th minute, Hamrun were unlucky when the Red Imps defense first cleared the ball from the line but from the same action Letherby's shot hit the crossbar.

The score remained unchanged even after 120 minutes and the match went to penalties where Marcelina, Montebello, Mayron and Mbong scored for Hamrun and Steve Borg failed, while Lincoln Red Imps scored the five penalties through Britto, Nano, De Barr, Garcia and Munoz.

Hamrun now play in the Second Qualifying Round of the Europa Conference League against FC Balkani of Kosovo.
