The number of new Covid-19 cases registered in Malta in the first half of July was the highest in 18 months, official figures show.

In the week ending 14 July, the number of new cases was 256, slightly lower than the 290 new cases that were recorded officially in the week ending 7 July.

Before these last two weeks, the last time that the number of cases had jumped over 200 was in the first week of 2023, when 241 cases had been registered.

Since then, the numbers have fluctuated between as low as zero cases reported in the week ending 10 March 2024 and the 180 cases registered in the week ending 27 August 2023.

Also, in the last two weeks the number of active cases has more than doubled from 208 in the week ending 30 June to the 519 in the week ending 14 July.

The last time that Malta had more than 519 active cases was on 13 August, 2022, when there had been 524.

Mass events are thought to be behind the rise in the number of cases in the last two weeks, during which six deaths related to Covid-19 were also recorded.

It must also be pointed out that the number of Covid-19 cases could be much higher since not all end up being officially reported.
