The European Parliament is set to elect its president today, with Malta’s Roberta Mertsola in the running for a second stint at the post she has occupied since January 2022.

Metsola, representing the European People’s Party, will be challenged by Spanish MEP Irene Montero.

The election is set to take place at 10am, after both candidates present their pitches to earn the post for the next two and a half years, half of the EP’s term.

While Metsola’s bid to retain her seat has been known for weeks, Montero entered the race on Monday just before the call for nominations closed.

The European Parliament in the afternoon will elect 14 vice-presidents while on Wednesday it will elect five Quaestors.
