Basketball: Maltese sides lose

Both men’s and women’s national teams ended on the losing end of the finals of the FIBA Small States of Europe Championships.

In Andorra the men’s national team lost against the hosts 84-79, and in Pristina Kosovo, the girls lost against favourites Norway 61-54, with Maltese basketball settling for two silver medals.

The men’s team had a four-point advantage by the end of the first part and was still in the lead half way through the fourth and final quarter. But in the final five minutes Andorra took the upper hand winning the last quarter by an eight-point margin to secure the gold medal. This was the second defeat for Malta against Andorra after suffering an 82-78 defeat in the group stage.

David Bugeja was Malta’s best scorer with 22 points, followed by Samuel Deguara with 18.

In Pristina the girls had similar fate against firm favourites Norway. The third quarter was fatal for the Malta girls as they suffered a 12-point deficit which proved to be too much to recover. For the girls however this was a superb championship with four straight victories on the way to the final.

Amber Constance Melgoza was once again Malta’s top scorer with 16 points followed by Stephanie De Martino with 12 points.
