Transport Minister Chris Bonett, together with the management of the Malta Air Traffic Services (MATS), has inaugurated the installation of a new VOR/DME navigation aid for Gozo.

During a visit at the VOR station area in Kerċem, Gozo, Bonett inaugurated the €700,000 expenditure, which replaced the previous installed system which has been in use for over 30 years, with a new one.

“This new system will significantly improve the safety and efficiency of flights over this region,” Bonett said.

The VOR (VHF Omni-directional Range) provides aircraft and other aerial vehicles with precise bearing information by sending a directional signal that helps pilots determine their position relative to the VOR station.

Additionally, the DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) calculates the distance of the aerial vehicle from the station by sending and receiving signals, allowing for precise distance measurement.

Bonett said that the installation of this new VOR/DME system in Gozo is a significant step forward in government’s ongoing efforts to improve the national aviation infrastructure.

"We are committed to investing in advanced technology to support the growth and development of our aviation sector. This investment emphasizes our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of aviation safety and reliability in our country," Bonett said.

Chief Technical Officer of MATS Jesmond Farrugia explained how this new system is the only one of its kind in the country, and also the only one in the centre of the Mediterranean.

He said that this continues to emphasize the value of the investment as the system covers the entire Mediterranean area. Both the VOR and DME systems broadcast the identifier "GZO" in Morse code, ensuring easy recognition by pilots.
