The Chamber of Architects has met the Transport Minister and a team from Infrastructure Malta to discuss the plans that it has drafted and presented for the Msida creek.

On Sunday, the Chamber of Architects unveiled new conceptual plans for the junction at Msida creek, which is set to see two flyovers built across it as part of Infrastructure Malta plans. The Chamber is proposing the removal of the flyovers, as well as to transform the core of the locality into a 20,000 square metre park.

In a press release, the Chamber said that its president Andre Pizzuto met Transport Minister Chris Bonett on Tuesday and another meeting was held between the design team of the proposal for Msida creek and Infrastructure Malta’s civil engineers.

“The purpose of the meeting was to explain the urban design and planning concepts behind the project to facilitate its development and implementation,” the Chamber said.

“The parties are to reconvene at a future date to provide IM with the time necessary for the technical development of the new project. The KTP team committed to remain available to assist with its technical expertise as needed,” it added.

Transport Minister Bonett had promised the meeting, saying that he could not ignore the reactions to the plans when they were unveiled.

“The proposal that has appeared in the media consists of one or two designs that, although visually pleasing, personally raise a number of questions for me about traffic management,” Bonett said, adding that it also raises a question on what freedom he has, at this stage, to vary or change the original project, and what legal and financial consequences there might be.

Bonett had reminded that the planning for the project began around five years ago, and several changes have been made to it, with wide consultation conducted. He said that after this whole process, a public tender was issued, which was won by a consortium and the contract was signed.
