58 students have successfully completed training courses to help the elderly. These training courses were provided by St. Vincent De Paul Residence in collaboration with the University of Malta.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing, Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, presented the certificates to these students for this occasion alongside the Pro Rector of the University, Professor Valerie Sollars, and Rebecca Cutajar, who is a Practice Development Nurse.
Within this cohort, two courses were offered: a Care for the Elderly course of MQF Level 5, with 14 credits, that is open to people who wish to become carers, and a course entitled “Dementia Care Practice,” which is also of MQF Level 5, comprising of six credits, that is given to the workers of St. Vincent De Paul.
Parliamentary Secretary Agius Galea wished the students well before saying that education and professional training are fundamental in ensuring a top-level service for the elderly.
“The fact that these courses are attracting both Maltese and foreigners is testimony to how important and effective they are,” he said, “We will continue to invest in the training and development of our workers to offer services that are always improving.”
Other similar courses on offer include “Moving & Handling” which exists as a Level 4 and Level 5 course for carers and nurses respectively and features both in-house and on-site sessions.
Courses on “Basic Medical Maltese” and “Cultural Maltese” are also exclusively on offer to foreign workers. The aim of these latter courses is to increase the knowledge and skills of foreign workers within the field dealing with the elderly, so that they can provide a higher quality and more comprehensive service.
