Hundreds of passengers hoping to cross the Malta-Gozo channel on Thursday faced hours-long delays after a group of mooring men didn’t report for work.

Drivers and passengers hoping to board the Gozo Channel ferry instead spent two to three hours in their car under the sun, with ferries even turning back from Cirkewwa at one point.

There was further anger as Gozo Channel failed to offer any explanation for the delays.

Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri however said on Facebook on Thursday afternoon that the delays were the result of the actions of a number of mooring men who either refused to work or did not show up at the terminal at all.

The workers, the Minister said, were not covered by any industrial action and had decided to strike on their own initiative to the detriment of both the company and the passengers.

The Minister said that Gozo Channel would be taking disciplinary steps against these workers, and he thanked others who, even though it is not their duty, stepped in to rectify the situation and allow the ferry service to return to normal.
