The Civil Protection Department has been involved in outting out multiple fires across various part of Malta in the past hours, the Department of Information said Saturday.
The first was the fire that engulfed a boat in Marsa, that resulted in toxic fumes caused by the burning of fibreglass. The fire was put out in the early hours of the morning in an operation that saw the participation of 30 firefighters and the use of 10 fire engines and a boat.
The firefighters used foam to control the toxic smoke.
Between Friday and Saturday, a fire broke out in Wied Fulija, Zurrieq, and it quickly spread because of a strong breeze. A magisterial inquiry was set up to investigate the cause of the fire, which spread across an area covering the size of two football grounds.
There were also a grass fire in San Gwann which was controlled within a short time, the statement said.
The CPD said it is investing in equipment that could be used in emergency situations. It asked the public to exercise caution especially in areas that are susceptible to fires.
