Satisfaction for Sala's release - Milan prosecutor general
Very happy for reporter's return says Abedini's lawyer
Milan's Prosecutor General Francesca
Nanni on Wednesday said there were no new developments in the
case of Mohammed Abedini Najafabadi, a Swiss-Iranian citizen
arrested at Milan's Malpensa airport on December 16 at the
request of the United States, while expressing "great
satisfaction" for the release of Italian journalist Cecilia
Sala, who was detained in Iran three days later in an apparent
retaliation for his arrest.
The Public Prosecutor's Office at Milan's Appeals Court has
given a non-binding opinion against granting a request for house
arrest from the defence lawyers of Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi.
Abedini was arrested on a warrant issued by the US for allegedly
supplying drone components to Tehran allegedly used to kill
three US servicemen in Jordan a year ago.
A hearing on the request is scheduled for January 15.
Judicial sources on Wednesday, however, said a request to revoke
Abedini's detention could be presented in the coming hours by
the justice ministry.
In such a case, the Iranian could be released.
Meanwhile Abedini's lawyer Alfredo De Francesco on Wednesday
expressed satisfaction for Sala's release saying he was "very
happy she is returning home".
