NYE firework injuries hit 10-year high
309 people hurt, 50 people removed from new Milan 'red zones'
The number of people injured by
fireworks on New Year's Eve hit a 10-year high on Tuesday night,
the interior ministry said.
There were 309 injuries in Italy during New Year's celebrations,
the highest number in the last ten years.
Some 69 of them required hospitalization.
No one was killed, as has been the case in recent years.
Many minors ended up in hospital, 90 compared to 64 last year.
About 28,200 people were checked, 146 were arrested and 520 were
cited, said the Viminale.
New checks were carried out in seven large cities by the police
this year. It was first test for the newly set up 'red zones' in
Milan, where there were over 2,000 checks on New Year's Eve, and
50 people removed. Italy's criminal lawyers are protesting the
security crackdown saying that basic freedoms are being
violated.
