Cops call for reinforcements after night of unrest in Milan
Tensions rise on outskirts after death of Egyptian, 19
Milan police HQ on Tuesday called for
reinforcements after a night of unrest following the death in a
police car chase of a young Egyptian man.
The tension in the outlying Corvetto district of the Lombard
capital was ignited after the death on a scooter of Ramy Elgaml,
a 19-year-old Egyptian, in a car accident during the night
between Saturday and Sunday in a pursuit by the Carabinieri.
The Milan Police Headquarters said it was "oriented" to ask for
reinforcements after the disturbances that occurred during the
night in the Corvetto neighborhood, which have come in what is
traditionally one of the most challenging periods of the year
for public order, because it culminates with the premiere of La
Scala on St Ambrose' day, the Milan patron saint, on December 7.
About thirty more officers could be used for the new, possible
tensions that could arise in the neighborhood in the south-east
of the city that for years has already been at the center of
problems of degradation and illegal building.
The right-wing League party, which rules Lombardy, asked "is
this the kind of integration that the (centre-left Democratic
Party) PD wants?"
