Libra reaches Albania with 8 migrants on board
Group rescued four days ago south of Lampedusa
The Italian Navy ship Libra reached
the Albanian port of Shengjin on Friday with eight migrants on
board who were intercepted four days ago south of the Sicilian
island of Lampedusa.
The group includes three Egyptians and eight citizens of
Bangladesh, well-informed sources said.
The eight asylum seekers will undergo medical screenings and
identification procedures before being transferred to the
Italian-run Gjader centre where they will wait for their
detention to be validated by the immigration unit of Rome's
tribunal.
The first group of asylum seekers to be taken by the Libra to
Albania included 12 citizens of Bangladesh and Egypt whose
detention at the processing centre was not validated by the Rome
court on October 18 on the grounds that their countries of
provenance were not whole safe, based on a decision issued
earlier that month by the European Court of Justice.
On October 21, the cabinet approved a decree defining a list of
safe countries for repatriation including Bangladesh and Egypt.
