24-hour local public transport strike kicks off across Italy
Starting at 5:30
Local public transport will be
severely affected by a 24-hour-long strike that kicked off at
5:30 Friday across Italy involving bus, tram and metro services.
Only 30% of personnel is working during rush-hours, which are
usually exempt from such strikes, for the first time since 2005.
Overall, a number of services will be guaranteed at different
times in cities across Italy: in Milan, subway services and a
some tram and bus services will be provided until 8:45 and
between 15 and 18; the A and B metro lines will be guaranteed in
Rome, and a few bus and tram services until 8:30 and between 17
and 20; in Naples, limited bus services will be provided between
6:30 and 9:30 and between 17 and 20.
Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) railway personnel will also strike.
The protest was called by Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl, Uiltrasporti,
Faisa Cisal and Ugl Fna over the failure to renew the sector's
collective labour contract, the lack of resources devoted to it
and to call for better health and safety.
The unions are scheduled to hold a demonstration outside the
transport ministry in Rome on Friday.
An eight-hour strike of railway workers was held across Italy on
Tuesday after a ticket inspector working on a regional train was
stabbed near the Liguria station of Rivarolo.
