Over 6 mn Italians live abroad - study
Up 11.8% compared to 2020 says Migrantes
Italy has lost approximately 652,000
residents since 2020 as more Italians have chosen to live
abroad, up 11.8% compared to 2020, according to the 19th
research on Italians in the World released by the Migrantes
Foundation on Tuesday .
Today, over 6.1 million Italians reside abroad said Migrantes.
"The only Italy that grows continues to be the one that has
chosen to live abroad", the study noted.
The foundation's research stressed the negative impact of
emigration on low-income areas of Italy, calling for more
attention "at all levels to reintroduce policies aimed at giving
newfound attraction" to specific contexts.
Overall last year 89,462 Italians moved abroad, up 9.1% on 2022.
In particular youths, young adults and Italians over-65 chose to
leave the country permanently, according to the study.
The regions with the highest number of emigres in 2024 were
Sicily, followed by Lombardy and Veneto.
A reported 45.8% of Italians registered as living abroad are
from the South - over 2.8 million, including 956,000 who hail
from the islands, said Migrantes.
