Opposition centre-left Democratic Party (PD) whips in the Senate and Lower House, respectively Francesco Boccia and Chiara Braga, on Monday asked Premier Giorgia Meloni to urgently report to Parliament in connection with a major investigation into a suspected snooping gang that allegedly put together illicit dossiers on commission by sifting through national strategic databases.
"The scenario that emerges from the hacking investigation and from the news we read every day on the issue is disquieting", the whips said in a note.
"We are faced with a security system of the country that is full of holes and which, as is clear, is used by the Right in government for dangerous dossier-making and internal conflicts.
"At this point, it is necessary for the prime minister to urgently come to Parliament: we want to know how it is possible for the SDI system", i.e. the police force database, "to be violated, with the hacking of data apparently involving top institutions", said the note.
Braga and Boccia added in the statement that the cabinet, "after approving a useless law on cyber security, absolutely without funding, is helplessly witnessing an internal conflict between power groups at the expense of the Italian democracy", and asked "which initiatives the government intends to take now to patch up this grave hole in the security system".
