The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) said on Saturday that it has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the acquittal of World number one Jannik Sinner in relation to the Clostebol case.
WADA said in a statement that last month's ruling by an independent court convened by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) that found the "absence of fault or negligence" was "not correct under the applicable rules" after Sinner tested positive twice to Clostebol, a banned substance, in March this year during the Indian Wells tournament.
Sinner's defence said he had been inadvertently contaminated with the banned substance by his physiotherapist.
The World Anti-Doping Agency said the 23-year-old Italian tennis player should be banned between one and two years.
Sinner won the US Open in New York earlier this month.
On Saturday, Sinner said he was "very surprised and disappointed" by WADA's decision.
"It's not very simple, but I can't control everything" Sinner told a press conference.
The tennis player said he is "convinced I will be found innocent", commenting WADA's appeal to CAS.
Sinner, who is in Beijing for the China Open tournament, said he learned "privately" about the anti-doping agency's move "a couple of days ago".
