Centre-right post Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) leader Antonio Tajani said Monday FI is going to push ahead with a so-called 'ius scholae' (Latin for law of the school) reform to grant Italian citizenship to the children of immigrants once they have completed mandatory schooling in Italy, rather than wait until they are 18 to apply as at present.
Asked to comment on FI's allies Brothers of Italy (FdI) and the League saying the issue was "a summer issue" that had now been set aside, FI sources said "no it isn't, it's an issue we want to address".
Tajani has asked parliamentary whips to come up with an "organic proposal" on a reform bill by the end of this month, the sources told ANSA: Ius scholae would have the support of the opposition, although it would prefer ius soli (law of the soil), or automatic citizenship for being born on Italian soil, which is the norm in many other western democracies.
