A 90-year-old invalid who is severely ill is about to be evicted from her apartment in Genoa, Bruno Manganaro, leader of the local chapter of the Sunia tenants' union, said on Tuesday. The elderly lady used to be aided by her daughter.
    However, after the daughter lost her job in 2022, she stopped being able to help financially and the mother's pension was not sufficient to pay for her medical expenses and the rent, Manganaro said.
    "The daughter has stayed to assist the mother day and night but paying rent has become impossible", he explained.
    "It's certainly not positive to be in rental arrears but being old, sick, without public facilities available to host her and with an unemployed daughter can be extremely damaging financially and psychologically", said Sunia's leader. After the apartment's owner requested the intervention of judicial authorities, the tribunal of Genoa ordered the eviction of the mother and daughter which was appealed by Sunia with the request to postpone it by three months.
    No agreement was reached and the eviction has been scheduled for August 28, the organization said in the statement.
    "Once again, we are reporting a housing emergency and we will be at the elderly woman's home on Wednesday morning to try to stop this injustice", it concluded.
