Lupa contrada wins Siena Palio
After epic horse race was postponed due to thunderstorm
The Lupa (She-wolf) contrada won the
August Siena Palio on Saturday night.
Siena's world-famous horse race took place after being postponed
Friday due to a thunderstorm.
Jockey Dino Pes, nicknamed Velluto (Velvet), rode Benitos,
winning the race dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption.
The Palio, meaning "banner", dating back to the 13th century, is
one of Italy's most iconic tourist attractions as well as a
deep-rooted tradition of the Tuscan city, which arouses deep
intraurban rivalry.
