Travel chaos as snow wreaks havoc at Irish airports, forcing delays and cancellations
Travel plans continue to be disrupted as significant snowfall is experienced in many areas this afternoon
Many people travelling into and out of Ireland today may face significant delays or even flight cancellations as snow and icy conditions intensify across the country.
While some areas only had heavy rain to contend with in the early hours of Sunday, January 5, conditions have now taken a turn for the worse in most areas.
This comes as a number of weather warnings remain in place as Met Eireann expects the drop in temperatures to coincide with persistent snow and treacherous travelling conditions in the coming hours and days.

The country's largest airport, Dublin Airport, has reported a number of delays and cancellations in recent hours. Flights to Manchester, London, Valencia, Geneva, Edinburgh, Liverpool, North Pole, Prague, Nice, Paris, Stockholm, Seville, Istanbul, Rome, Amsterdam and Lisbon have all faced delays today while several others have been cancelled.
Flights to and from Manchester and London have been delayed at Cork Airport, while flights from Shannon to Manchester, and Bridgetown to Shannon were also cancelled. Morning flights between Kerry Airport and both Dublin and Luton were cancelled this morning.
Further disruptions are almost certain at most airports as the snow blast affects flight times.
A spokesperson for Dublin Airport wrote this morning: "Operations at Dublin Airport are moving well this morning following periods of rain and sleet overnight. Temperatures of 3 degrees mean de-icing of aircraft has not been required so far today.
"The threat of snow later this afternoon remains and the airport’s snow and ice teams are on site to carry out pre-emptive spraying on the airfield as required. Heavy snow in the UK is causing some disruption to airline schedules and several UK airports are closed for snow clearing, while others have flow controls in place. This is having an impact on operations at Dublin.
"As of 09.30, 7 inbound and 7 outbound flights have been cancelled to/from Dublin Airport and we have welcomed four diverted flights from UK airports. As always, passengers seeking updates regarding specific flights should contact their airline directly. Those travelling to Dublin Airport today should allow plenty of time for their journey."
