'I'm a teenager lifting 150,000 kg in weights over January to help build houses in Africa'
16-year-old Ben is on a mission to help build homes in Zambia, Africa as part of his local GAA club, with a plan to lift 150,000 kg in gym workouts over January to help raise funds
An inspirational teenager is starting off the new year by launching a fundraising campaign to help build homes for a community in need - lifting a mammoth 150,000 kg in weights over January to show he is serious.
Ben is a member of South Dublin’s Cuala GAA, who have an “annual mission” to visit a Zambian community where a team of dedicated teens help to build houses for two weeks. Over the years this work has helped deliver homes and education for families in need, with all the hard work done by teens and supervised by adults.
The young lad shared he was “lucky” for the opportunity to help a community in need and that he was able to experience the journey with his friends.

The 16-year-old told the Irish Mirror: "I’m very lucky to be given this opportunity to go and help a community in need and to experience this trip with many friends. I hope other people get to experience this as well."
Ahead of his trip to Zambia, Ben has launched a GoFundMe to help contribute to building costs, a donation to the Nsobe school and to cover the team’s room and board - and the teen has set himself a challenge to show how committed he is to the cause.
Over the month of January, Ben plans on lifting a whopping 150,000 kg in weights in a workout plan that has been approved by a strength and conditioning coach.
“My name is Ben and I'm 16 years old,” A post on the GoFundMe page reads.
“My sports club Cuala GAA has an annual mission to visit the Nsobe community in Zambia where for two weeks a team of teenagers build houses to support this community.
“Over many years, this valuable work has delivered homes and education for families in need. This is hard manual work, supervised by adults but done directly by the teens.
“Your donations will contribute to building costs, a donation to the local Nsobe school and the cost of the team’s accommodations and sustenance while we are there.
“In order to prepare and to show you how committed I am, I am setting myself the following challenge: In the month of January, I will lift 150,000kg in gym workouts with weights. My workout plan has been approved by my strength and conditioning coach and is safe.
“Please support me to help this deserving community in Zambia. I will post updates on my progress here from time to time.”
So far Ben has raised over €1,760 out of his €3,500 target. To support Ben in his mission to help get houses built in Zambia, head here.
