Met Eireann issues weather war

Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow wind warning for six counties this weekend.

With many heading home for Christmas early over the coming days, those on their way to certain areas could face difficult travelling conditions on Saturday and Sunday, according to the national forecaster.

A Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for the counties of Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal from 3am on Saturday morning to 6pm on Sunday evening.

Met Eireann has warned of "sustained strong and gusty westerly winds veering northwesterly coupled with large coastal waves" in the affected regions during the course of the weather warning, with the potential impacts including possible wave overtopping and/or spray, difficult travelling conditions and some fallen trees.

The strong wind will be coupled with showers becoming widespread on Saturday night into Sunday morning and some of the rainfall could turn heavy and wintry, especially in parts of Ulster.

Some snow could fall on Sunday, though showers will become confined to the west and north on Sunday afternoon as the risk of wintry falls fades.

Looking ahead to Christmas Eve and the big day itself, Met Eireann expects the middle of next week to be dominated by light rain and drizzle with little chance of a White Christmas as temperatures will range between 10C and 13C on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
