One of my favourite tech brands for the last decade, OnePlus has just fired the opening salvo of the 2025 smartphone wars as it bids to challenge heavyweight brands Samsung and Google for top spot.

2024 may be almost over, having treated us to an array of fantastic smartphones, from the iPhone 16 Pro Max to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, Oppo Find X8 Pro and Honor Magic 6 Pro, but the only smartphones that I reviewed which were dubbed “perfect” were Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.

OnePlus 12 was close to perfect and one of the best phones of the year as it offered many of the same flagship features as Samsung and Google but for a much more affordable price. You can snap one up currently for as little as €799.

Now, OnePlus has confirmed what many fans already knew - that January will see the arrival of two exciting new handsets that look set to arrive ahead of the expected January launch of Samsung’s S25 series.

OnePlus 13

In Ireland, OnePlus will launch its brand new OnePlus 13 flagship smartphone on January 7, 2025 which is literally weeks away and the perfect way to kick off the new year.

The firm said that OnePlus 13 “features a slim design, an elegant camera layout following the golden ratio, and three stunning new colourways: Black Eclipse, Arctic Dawn, and Midnight Ocean.” The black and arctic variants will be glass sandwich designs, but the blue midnight version is, according to the company, “the first phone to feature micro-fibre vegan leather”.

OnePlus 13 is powered by the awesome new high-end Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, the best mobile chip ever, and will sport a 2K resolution 6.82in screen with a variable refresh rate and peak brightness of 4,500 nits.

While the more affordable OnePlus 13R is a pocket powerhouse combining showstopping design with blistering flagship level performance. The firm said it features super adaptable cameras, a lighter-than-air operating system and a massive 6,000mAh battery. It will be launching in two colourways, Nebula Noir and Astral Trail.

Both handsets run the OxygenOS 15 operating system that the firm said “integrates advanced AI features designed to deliver a lighter, smarter, and smoother experience”. It will have an improved search function, AI photo tools and other AI smarts.

OnePlus Buds Pro 3

Along with the new phones, on January 7 you will be able to buy OnePlus Buds Pro 3 in an elegant Sapphire Blue colourway, perfectly complementing the OnePlus 13 Midnight Ocean, and completing a cohesive premium product lineup. Building on their already impressive functionality, the Buds Pro 3 will introduce AI translation in collaboration with the OnePlus 13 series, offering seamless convenience for everyday communication and office tasks.
