A woman who was critically injured after she was assaulted in Co Galway earlier this week has died from her injuries.

Gardaí are investigating the attack, which occurred at a residence in Ballinasloe at approximately 7pm on Monday (December 9) evening.

When gardai arrived at the property they discovered a woman in her 50s with serious injuries. The woman was rushed from the scene to Portiuncula University Hospital in a critical condition.

Gardaí have confirmed that she died from her injuries on Thursday. The local coroner has been notified and a post mortem examination will take place in due course.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have any information on this incident to come forward as they confirmed investigations into the incident are ongoing.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballinasloe Garda Station at 090 963 1890, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station," a garda spokesperson said in a statement.

A man in his 50s appeared before Ballinasloe District Court yesterday, Thursday, in relation to the assault.
