Man Utd face Marcus Rashford rejection as January transfer plan hits rocks
Marcus Rashford's Manchester United future is uncertain after poor form after signing his new contract as the club look to cut costs, but selling the forward will not prove simple
Manchester United are 'open' to cashing in on Marcus Rashford - but will be required to be patient to secure a sale for the forward.
It emerged on Tuesday that the Red Devils are willing to remove the academy product's £325,000-per-week salary from their books, little over a year on from signing a new contract. Rashford's deal is set to run until 2028 with United seeing little in the way of a return thus far after a difficult period for the 27-year-old.
The 60-times capped England international managed just eight goals across all competitions last term. Though be has already notched seven efforts in 2024/25, it has been an inconsistent period for Rashford who has not established himself as a guaranteed starter under new boss Ruben Amorim.
According to reports, United would be open to selling Rashford in January. It is more likely they will be forced to wait until at least the summer and perhaps beyond to see a significant offer however.
Within a year of signing his latest contract in 2023, United were already seeking potential suitors and so far, that has proven fruitless in completing a transfer. While selling Rashford would prove bountiful for the club to generate some breathing space with regard to the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, the finances of a deal make it prohibitive for most clubs to even consider prising the player away from Old Trafford.
Speaking earlier this month, Amorim admitted he was still hoping to see more from Rashford. "We'll try to find the right solution for him but he has to be Marcus, first of all, to try to return to that moment," he said.
"Then he will have all the help of the staff, the club and the fans because he is a Manchester United boy. But he has to be the first one to want it."
Since investing in the club, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has attempted to bring down speding on and off the field. United staff have seen their traditional Christmas party scrapped and their bonus cut by the club's new ownership in the club's latest move.
This year's party is said to have been cancelled after it was deemed inappropriate to hold a celebration after redundancies earlier in the year. Around 250 jobs have been cut since Ratcliffe's arrival, nearly of a quarter of the workforce.
