Rory McIlroy's Ryder Cup teammate looking for LIV Golf move
McIlroy was on the same team as Wood in 2016.
Rory McIlroy's ex-Ryder Cup teammate Chris Wood is looking to put his recent struggles behind him by playing his way onto the LIV Golf setup for 2025.
Wood has enjoyed plenty of success during his career on the DP World Tour, winning three times. His most notable win came at the BMW PGA Championship in 2016, which then helped him qualify to compete for Team Europe at the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.
In the years that have followed however, the Englishman has failed to find the form that saw him become one of his continent's top players, but he is keen to bounce back in Saudi Arabia this week.
Wood is one of a number of stars competing at LIV Promotions in Riyadh, with the winner earning a lucrative spot on the breakaway circuit's roster for 2025. Ahead of the 72-hole qualifier in the Middle East, Wood revealed he has been working hard to come through a tough patch in his career and life.
"I have had a difficult few years where I've struggled to want to go to the golf course, let alone play," he told Mirror Sport. "Whereas now I am much hungrier. The fire is very much alive for me to play. Results have been tough, but the first step was getting back onto the golf course and wanting to be there.
"I have done a lot of good work to get back to this place." Having seemingly come out of the other side of his struggles, Wood is now relishing the chance to play his way onto a roster that includes some of the best players on the planet, including some of his former Ryder Cup teammates.
"[LIV Promotions] has been on my radar this year," he said. "I was fortunate enough to get an invite this week. I am very lucky in that regard, but now you are here you feel like you have got to capitalise on that opportunity. In my position, I feel like I have achieved some good things in my career but feel I have so much more to go on to."
Still only 37, Wood believes he still has plenty of time at the top level of men's professional golf still in him, taking inspiration from LIV star Lee Westwood and his former Ryder Cup partner Justin Rose. "I see as I've got 10-years of top-level golf," Wood continued.
"You look at players like Westwood, he is a good example. In the summer I played Open Qualifying with Justin Rose, my foursomes partner at the Ryder Cup. He is mid-forties, finished second at The Open. Rosey is the ultimate pro, he ticks every box and very much how I see myself. There is a lot of inspiration there for me."
