Former X Factor judge Louis Walsh has opened up about his shock cancer diagnosis but declared he is in remission.

The music mogul revealed earlier this year that he was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer called Waldenstrom cancer, which is a slow-growing and rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It affects blood cells called plasma cells.

The Mayo native said that after his treatment at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin, that he is “fine now” and “in remission”.

Speaking to Nicky Byrne on his podcast, Nicky Byrne HQ, he said: “I’m fine now. I did have a thing called Waldenstrom cancer. It’s a blood cancer. I didn’t realise until I went to the Mater Private to check me out.

“I was told it’s fine, it’s manageable and I’m in remission and I’m feeling good.”

Reacting to the moment doctors told him he had cancer, he said: “You think it is so scary but nowadays modern medicine, they can do everything.

“Mater Private, fantastic nurses and doctors. They’re the real stars. Those men and women, they work tirelessly to help everybody and they cure people. I’m fixed and I’m fine.”

But the 72-year-old said it took him a while to get back on his feet again. “Yeah mentally and physically, I didn’t know what to do," he said. “The word cancer, you hear it and you think ‘God’.”

Louis got checked because he was feeling tired but he put it down to his busy work schedule after judging on X Factor. “When I got checked, they didn’t find it initially. It’s a rare one.. but I’m in remission, I’m fine. They can manage it," he said.

Louis also opened up about the death of Stephen Gately – saying he sometimes thinks he is still alive. Stephen died at just age 33 in 2009 due to a heart condition while staying at his holiday home in Majorca.

Louis opened up about the moment he was told about Stephen's tragic death. He said: “It was Saturday night after the X Factor, and I got all these texts.

“I couldn’t believe it. It was awful. It’s still hard to believe that he is gone. I still think he might be there somewhere. What a waste.”

Louis said Stephen “dreaded” coming out as gay.

“He always dreaded it. I thought it would damage his career, and it would finish him but it actually helped. There wasn’t any negativity at all. It made no difference, but he was frightened all his life about it.”

Louis said jokingly that he “kind of guessed” he was gay.

“He didn’t tell me. I kind of guessed. He liked Mariah Carey, and he liked Eurovision. That was a red flag, and he loved Celine Dion,” he said laughing.

Louis added that Stephen was “100 percent loyal and great fun and hard working”.
