Met Eireann issues Status Orange warning to three counties as Storm Bert set to wreak havoc
Storm Bert becomes the second storm of the season, bringing another change to the weather this weekend – much wetter and windier
Met Éireann has placed three counties under a Status Orange rain warning this weekend as Storm Bert gets set to bring intense falls of rain.
The national forecaster named Storm Bert on Thursday morning and also issued a Status Yellow wind and rain warning for Ireland from Friday night, 10pm, into Saturday morning, expiring at midday.
On Thursday afternoon, Met Éireann placed Cork, Kerry, and Galway under a Status Orange rain warning, with “intense falls of rain” expected “over a short period of time”. The warning will come into effect at midnight on Friday and last until 10am on Saturday morning.

Some possible impacts from the storm for these counties include surface flooding, possible river flooding and very difficult travelling conditions.
A Weather Advisory for the entire country was also issued on Thursday and is valid from just before midday on Thursday until midnight on Tuesday.
Issuing the advisory, Met Éireann warned: “Storm Bert will continue to dominate our weather through the weekend and into early next week and further warnings will be issued for this event.”
On Thursday, Storm Bert became the second storm of the 2024/2025 season. Bert is a low-pressure system currently forming in the Atlantic.
Met Éireann has warned that when it moves closer to Ireland, it will displace the current cold Artic air, introducing very strong winds and heavy rain.
Meteorologist Andrew Doran-Sherlock said: “Storm Bert will bring milder but very wet and windy conditions for the weekend.
“Heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday will likely lead to localised flooding in urban areas and some river catchments, particularly in the west and southwest, as this rain is falling on already saturated and waterlogged ground.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and will upgrade/issue warnings as Met Éireann’s high-resolution model (which provides information two days ahead) is analysed.
“There’s a strong likelihood of status orange wind warnings in western and northwestern counties. The impacts from Storm Bert will commence later on Friday and will continue through the weekend and potentially through early next week as well.”
