Met Eireann has issued several weather warnings for the hours ahead as the big freeze sets in
The big freeze has set in and various parts of Ireland are waking up to a wide range of weather warnings; with snow, sleet, heavy rain and freezing temperatures forecast.
The harshest effects of the recent cold snap are expected today, Thursday November 21, and significant disruption is anticipated as a result.
Met Eireann has issued several weather warnings for the hours ahead, with the entire country falling under a Status Yellow low temperature/ice warning until midday today.

Meanwhile, a Status Orange snow/ice warning came into effect for the counties of Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Galway at midnight and that will remain valid until midday, with significant snowfall accumulations forecast. Cork and Waterford fall under a Status Orange snow/rain warning for the same period.
A Status Yellow snow/ice warning came into place for the counties of Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Wicklow, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Westmeath, Longford and all of Munster at 9pm last night. That too will expire at midday today.

"A very cold and treacherous start to Thursday with lying snow across parts the Midlands, West and Southwest; frost and ice in places too with spot flooding across southern fringes," a Met Eireann spokesperson said.
"Wintry outbreaks of snow, sleet, rain will clear most areas by mid-morning, and southern counties by midday. While sunshine will develop, a few scattered wintry showers will follow into Atlantic counties. Icy stretches will linger through the day in places. Highest temperatures of just 1 to 4 degrees in a chilly northerly winds, brisk across Munster.
"Tonight will be very cold with widespread frost and icy stretches. Scattered wintry showers of rain, sleet and snow will occur with clearest skies across the Midlands and Southeast. Lowest temperatures of -4 to +1 degrees in moderate westerly winds.
"Friday will be a mostly dry with spells of sunshine; frosty and icy starting out though. A few well scattered wintry showers will occur early on too with a dusting of snow in places. Highest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees in moderate southwest to west winds."
