Reverend Richard Coles says he is terrified that a health condition will cause massive friction in the camp.

The 62-year-old told the Mirror he is worried about his snoring and “everybody wanting to kill me because I keep them awake at night.”

He says the problem is so bad that his partner is delighted he is going to Australia - so he can get away from the noise.

"I'd be worried about the snoring actually, because my partner is not a fan of that at all. He made me have this thing. It's like a boxer's gum shield put in to stop snoring. But after a while, you just feel it's just getting a little bit Frankenstein."

Richard said his preparation for the jungle entailed consuming 5000 calories a day on a cruise and avoiding ‘triggering’ nature documentaries.

The star, who will be seen going into I’m A Celebrity today said: “I would like to say that I've been lowering my calorie intake to prepare for that, but that's not worked out so far. I've been trying not to look at nature programs about the horrors of Australia.”

He added: “I am also worried about finding a fear I didn't know I had yet and going to pieces on television in front of a koala or wombat or something.”

But Richard is also thrilled about being the first vicar in the jungle. ”I don't think there are many precedents for this, although, vicars have been going into jungles for years and years and years as missionaries.”

Asked what will annoy him, he says: "Sniffing. I'm also not naturally a patient person. Also I lived in the monastery for two years. So I know what it's like to be locked in with people you didn't choose to be with. So I've got some resilience. Except there wasn't food deprivation, instead there was a lot of cake in the monastery. So I don't know what it will be like.”

Speaking in the days before heading into camp, he says he was non-plussed by the eating trials. “I like eating weird things anyway, so I have a rule of, whenever I go anywhere, is to eat the local delicacy, which is sometimes not great,” he says.

But one of his greatest fears is going hungry. “I'm never more than 12 feet away from a sandwich, so that's going to be quite tricky." Richard says that he may very well call upon his faith when faced with some of the more hairy trials. But he says that he won’t go out of his way to talk about religion. “I'm not going to go around singing Onward Christian Soldiers,” he jokes.

He will also miss the simpler things in life such as playing the piano. “I don't imagine there is a piano in camp. It's the daily routine stuff that I like doing, such as nipping out for a coffee, or getting my nose hair waxed at the Turkish barbers in Eastbourne.”

I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! airs every night at 9PM on ITV1 and ITV X.
