Ireland weather: Temperatures plunge to subzero amid reports of 'thundersnow' in some areas
Some regions saw temperatures as low as -5C overnight and it is set to remain a cold day, with plenty of ice, sleet and snow spreading down through the country
Take care on the roads this morning as much of Ireland is waking up to patches of frost and ice due to the overnight rain and a significant plunge in temperatures.
The cold snap is living up to the forecast as some areas saw temperatures as low as -5C in recent hours, ahead of what will be a freezing cold day across most of the country.
An overnight low temperature/ice warning remains in place for all of Ireland until 10am this Wednesday morning, November 20, and it will return later this evening, at 8pm, when Met Eireann anticipates conditions to be "very cold with widespread frost and icy stretches."

Ireland seems to be getting a little bit of everything weather-wise this week as lightning was reported in Donegal overnight, with the rare phenomenon known as 'thundersnow' experienced in some areas of the county, as well as in Sligo.
While most of the wintry showers have been confined to the north and west up to now, sleet and snow will spread south through the afternoon and evening.
This comes ahead of a Status Yellow snow/ice warning for Munster tomorrow, Thursday November 21, from 4am to midday as snowfall accumulations are forecast for the province, which could lead to poor visibility and hazardous travelling conditions.
"A cold day today with frost and icy stretches on untreated surfaces this morning, lingering in some spots through the day," a Met Eireann spokesperson said. "Dry with sunshine for many but scattered showers of sleet and snow will continue in the north and northwest. Turning cloudier in the afternoon with a spell of heavy rain moving into the west and southwest, turning to hail, sleet and snow at times as it spreads inland. Afternoon highs of just 3 to 6 degrees in light northwesterly or variable winds.
"Rain will spread across the southern half of the country tonight, turning to sleet and snow at times away from coasts with some accumulations possible. Further north it will be mostly dry with scattered wintry showers continuing in Ulster and north Connacht. Very cold with lowest temperatures of -4 to 0 degrees in light to moderate easterly or variable winds. Widespread frost and ice will develop.
"Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow will clear to the south tomorrow morning, leaving another very cold day with showers of rain, sleet and snow, most frequent across Connacht, Ulster and west Munster. Some icy stretches will linger through the day with temperatures reaching just 1 to 4 degrees in light to moderate northwesterly winds, fresher near northern coasts.
"A cold night with widespread frost and icy stretches developing. Mostly dry with clear spells, though scattered showers of rain, sleet and snow will feed into Ulster, Connacht and Munster. Lowest temperatures of -4 to +1 degrees in moderate westerly winds."
